Hi Kendke, This reminds me of a scene outside my window a few years ago. Lived out in the woods with many chipmunks and squirrels who had quite a fondness for our strawberry patch. The squirrels would grab a strawberry, then sit up on our deck chairs and nibble at the strawberries the way we would a corn on the cob (Making a mess of said deck chair arm). One day I noticed mama squirrel eating the strawberry while baby squirrel (no longer tiny) kept trying to nurse. I thought I heard mama saying "get your own strawberry kiddo". Wonder if I still have the video that I got that day. ? !
You know I had the same experience with Budette and her offspring year before last. At first they'd scamper along the fence with her on their way, but after she decided they were old enough, one day I saw her go after one of her kids with the same aggression that she used on birds that had gotten wise to the 'good thing' she had going at my place. I really found that interesting, because I'd imagined that I'd have a family of squirrels eating from my deck, but she had other plans. I gave you life, I breast fed you, I've shown you how and where to find food and how to store it. Now get going - you're on your own! Yep, they're my favorite teachers, animals really know how to do it! Sharing this with my cousin Keith who also has a squirrel, a bunch of crows and a few other birds. Happy New Year my friend.
